Only have 3 days in Cape Town? I’ve got your back! This might seem like a tall order considering all the incredible things this city has to offer but don’t worry. I’ve crafted an exhilarating 3-day itinerary that’s packed with unforgettable moments, making you already plan your next trip back!

My journey to the “Mother City,” as it’s affectionately known, felt like a homecoming. My siblings and I were actually born there. So, when the opportunity arose to revisit this breathtaking part of the world, my sister Tracy and I decided to spend two weeks exploring both Cape Town and Stellenbosch. We managed to conquer most of the “must-see” Cape Town highlights in just three action-packed days, leaving us with plenty of time for cooking classes, shopping sprees, extra hikes, and some well-deserved relaxation.

That said, flexibility will be your best friend. Sometimes interests change, and the weather might throw a curveball your way. That’s why I’ve added some alternative options to cater to your every whim. Cape Town and its surroundings are like a treasure chest for adventurers and wanderlusters alike.

From the iconic Table Mountain and the wild allure of Lion’s Head to the irresistible charm of the Cape of Good Hope and the sumptuous Winelands of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, your journey is about to become a tapestry of unforgettable experiences. So, grab your travel hat and sunscreen, and let’s dive into this whirlwind adventure together!

Cape Town, oh, it’s a big one! This city sprawls across a vast geographical canvas. It’s not like those cities where you can hop on a trusty subway or bus. Navigating Cape Town is more like getting around Los Angeles rather than the tightly packed streets of Manhattan.

Now, with all this ground to cover and the sheer awesomeness of its attractions, putting together a 3-day Cape Town itinerary is kind of like piecing together a thrilling puzzle. No matter your preferences, get ready to make a few decisions that will give your inner explorer a workout.

Oh, and let’s talk about an optional gem – a full day in Stellenbosch. I’m all in for it; seriously, it’s fantastic. But here’s the deal, it means you might have to subtract a day from your Cape Town adventure.

Curious about how we spent our 3 days in Cape Town? Well, we’ve got the whole adventure beautifully wrapped up in our YouTube video.

3 Days In Cape Town Itinerary Overview

Your 3-day adventure in Cape Town depends on your traveler type. If you’re into wineries, Stellenbosch offers a stunning vineyard experience that we absolutely loved. Hiking enthusiasts might opt for conquering Table Mountain like we did when the tram was undergoing maintenance. Keep an eye on the weather – climbing isn’t enjoyable in pouring rain and strong winds. Be sure to check the forecast before your daily activities and understand your tour’s modification or cancellation options.

Your adventure begins at the bustling Victoria & Alfred Waterfront (V&A), a really vibrant destination renowned for shopping, dining, and entertainment. At the Watershed, dive into a world of local creativity with over 300 brands offering everything from art to natural skincare, ideal for unique souvenirs. The V&A Waterfront, with Victoria Wharf and Alfred Mall, is a retail therapy haven blending local and global finds across 400+ shops.

  • Transportation Options: Getting here is a breeze; you can opt for a convenient taxi or Uber ride, or if you’re feeling active, enjoy a leisurely walk from nearby accommodations.
  • Duration: No rush! Take your time exploring this area filled with lovely boutiques, amazing art galleries, and picturesque waterfront views.

Lunch (12:00 PM – 2:00 PM): Waterfront

Recharge your energy with a leisurely lunch at one of the delightful waterfront restaurants.

  • Dining Options: You’re spoiled for choice when it comes to dining. Seafood is abundant in Cape Town where you’ll find incredible sushi restaurants and oysters plucked for nearby Saldanha Bay! Consider indulging in Belgian cuisine at “Den Anker,” savoring seafood delights at “Baía Seafood Restaurant,” or relishing a mouthwatering burger at “Gibson’s Gourmet Burgers & Ribs.”
  • Transportation: Simply walk to your chosen restaurant within the V&A Waterfront.

Afternoon (2:30 PM – 5:00 PM): Clifton Beach

After lunch, it’s time to unwind at the pristine Clifton Beach, famous for its soft sand and crystal-clear water.

  • Transportation Options: A quick taxi or Uber ride will have you at Clifton Beach in no time, just a short drive from the V&A Waterfront.
  • Duration: Spend your afternoon however you like – whether it’s sunbathing, strolling, or jogging along the shore, or simply enjoying the gorgeous ocean views.

Sundowner and Dinner (6:30 PM – 9:00 PM): Camps Bay

As the sun starts to set, head to Camps Bay for sundowners and a delightful dinner with an awe-inspiring backdrop.

Dining Options: Camps Bay boasts a range of dining establishments suitable for all tastes. Consider dining at “The Bungalow” for a beachfront experience, relishing Mediterranean flavors at “Paranga,” or treating yourself to a seafood extravaganza at “Codfather Seafood & Sushi.”

  • Transportation: To reach Camps Bay for your evening dining experience, simply hop in a taxi or Uber from Clifton Beach.
  • Costs: Prices for dining options may vary based on your choices, and transportation costs for taxis or Uber may fluctuate depending on distance and demand. Overall, we found food pricing in Cape Town very reasonable, as were Ubers.

Day 2: Embrace Nature, History, and Sunsets

You can do each of the suggestions below as well as tours along the way. The best way to get around is Uber.

Morning (8:00 AM – 11:00 AM): Hiking Lion’s Head

Grab breakfast before you head out and get ready for an invigorating hike up Lion’s Head, offering moderate trails and awe-inspiring panoramic views. We did an epic sunrise tour and loved it — you do have to be up early though! Once you’re finished, head over to the Bo Kaap neighborhood for the afternoon. From Lions Head, you can walk it (30 minutes) or take a cab (10-15 minutes)

  • Duration: Plan for about 2-3 hours to fully enjoy this hike.
  • Transportation: You can take a taxi or Uber from your hotel to the starting point. Let the driver know where you are going: Signal Hill Road, and you’ll see a designated parking area and the beginning of the hiking trail. > Google Map

Lunch (12:00 PM – 1:30 PM): Lunch in the enchanting Bo Kaap neighborhood

  • Dining Options: Bo Kaap is brimming with character, and you can find charming eateries like “Biesmiellah” for authentic Cape Malay cuisine, “Gold Restaurant” for a cultural dining experience, or “Haiku” for contemporary Asian cuisine with a view.
  • Tour Idea: Consider joining a guided walking tour of Bo Kaap to learn more about its history and vibrant culture.

Afternoon (2:30 PM – 4:30 PM): Bo Kaap and District Six Museum

  • Duration: Allocate approximately 2 hours to explore these locations.
  • Tour Ideas: Join a 1-hour walking tour of the Bo Kaap area and for a deeper understanding, you can join a guided tour of the District Six Museum. Or enjoy this incredible all-day tour that includes almost everything you’ll need to cover in 3 days!

Sunset (5:30 PM – 7:30 PM): From the summit of Table Mountain, a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

If you’re really into hiking, you can climb up instead. It took us 3.5 hours each way, so you could hike up and cable car down.

  • Duration: You’ll want to really enjoy this for about 2 hours.
  • Cost: To reach the summit, you can take the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway. Check the official website for current prices and ticket details. As a senior, I paid less than $4 USD, and for an adult, it’s roughly $13 USD each way, cheaper roundtrip.
  • Tips:
    • Arrive a bit early to secure the best viewing spot and relish the changing hues of the sky as the sun dips below the horizon.
    • There’s a restaurant and cafe at the Table Mountain summit where you can buy drinks and food.
    • The temperature can fluctuate dramatically! We started in T-shirts and ended in coats!
    • There is a thing called “Table Top” when the mountain is shrouded in a white blanket and you won’t be able to see a decent sunset, so watch the weather carefully when planning. Weather also affects the cable car schedules.

Dinner (after 8 PM) – V&A Waterfront area

If you have enough energy, here are three fabulous restaurant options near the V&A Waterfront.

  1. The Grand Africa Café & BeachMediterranean and seafood

Day 3: Road Trip to Cape Point

On the last day of our Cape Town adventure, get ready for a jaw-dropping road trip to Cape Point, a nature reserve perched at the very tip of the Cape Peninsula. We’ve got a day of stunning landscapes, penguin encounters, and epic coastal drives ahead! There are 3 great ways to see this, on a tour (easiest), with a rented car or like we did, hiring a private driver as the roads are very windy and sometimes parking is a challenge.

Before I dig in, the easiest way to do this is by tour or with a driver — and we had the best experiences on the tours as well as their Hop On Hop Off.

➡️ Hire a Private Chauffeur for up to 7 people

➡️ Enjoy the Cape Point and Boulder’s Bay Group Tour

➡️ Jump on the Hop On Hop Off – Routes vary

Morning (8:00 AM – 10:00 AM) – Muizenberg & Kalk Bay

Our journey begins with a visit to Muizenberg, a hotspot for surfers with its iconic colorful beach huts. If you’re visiting during the summer and you’re a surfer, you might just catch some great waves! If not, go straight to the charming village of Kalk Bay. Here, you can wander through eclectic shops, bookstores, and art galleries. Take a stroll around the harbor and say hello to the local seals. When it’s time to refuel, you have two delicious options:

  1. Harbour House – Fancy with a sea view
  2. Kalky’s – Authentic local fish and chips (amazing!!!)

Mid-Day (11:00 AM – 1:00 PM) Boulders Beach and the Penguin Colony

Our next stop is the Instagram-worthy Boulders Beach, home to a colony of adorable African penguins. There are two areas to explore at Boulders Beach: one with a viewing platform where you can see most of the penguins and another where you can actually step onto the beach, swim (very cold!), and be closer to some penguins.

Afternoon (2:00 PM – 5:00 PM) – Cape Point Nature Reserve and Cape of Good Hope

Our grand finale takes us to the breathtaking Cape Point Nature Reserve. You can either hop on the Flying Dutchman Funicular for a scenic ride or embark on a hike to reach the famous Cape Point Lighthouse. The view from up there is nothing short of spectacular and is one of the highlights of our 3-day Cape Town adventure. If you have some extra time and energy, consider hiking down to the iconic Cape of Good Hope. But beware of the resident baboons – they’re mischievous, especially if they spot food!

Fun fact: The Cape of Good Hope isn’t the southernmost point of Africa; Cape Agulhas takes that title!

Gorgeous view of the Chapman's Peak Bay in Cape Town
“Chappies” – Chapman’s Peak (Lion’s Head and Table Mountain in the background)

Sunset (6:00 PM – 7:30 PM) – Chapman’s Peak Drive

On our way back to Cape Town, we’ll drive along the scenic Chapman’s Peak route, nicknamed Chappies by locals. Prepare for breathtaking cliffside vistas and numerous lookout points. We’ll make a pit stop at the main Chapman’s Peak Drive Lookout Point to soak in the stunning views of Hout Bay. If you time it right, a sunset drive here is pure magic! From Chapman’s Peak, it’s about a 40-minute drive back to the city.

Dinner (8:00 onward)

Again, you may exhausted, but if you have the energy, there are great places to eat on you way back into town. You can back to Camp’s Bay, or much closer is Hout Bay. These are all great.

  1. The Lookout Deck – seafood with stunning views of Hout Bay Harbor
  2. Mariner’s Wharf – Fresh seafood
  3. Dunes Beach Restaurant & Bar – Seafood and South African cuisine

Where To Stay In Cape Town

Cape Town buzzes with energy, offering a lot of variety. The majority of hotels and places to stay are conveniently located near the coastal areas and the V&A Waterfront. When visiting Cape Town, especially for the first time, I highly suggest staying in Camps Bay or near the V&A. These are my top picks!

📍Luxury Option: The Silo Hotel – This is an over-the-top, luxurious, and iconic establishment, located in a converted grain silo with stunning views of Table Mountain and the V&A Waterfront. This and the One & Only were our two favorites, and there is even a Belmond too, however further away from the V&A.

📍Luxury Option: Camps Bay 12 Apostles – This oceanfront hotel, offering views of the Twelve Apostles mountains, provides free shuttles to Camps Bay and V&A Waterfront and features the award-winning Sanctuary Spa with rock pools.

📍Mid-Range Option: Home Suite Hotel – This 4-star hotel is just a 7-minute walk from Three Anchor Bay Beach with an outdoor swimming pool, free private parking, and a shared lounge. Some rooms feature a balcony with a city view.

📍Budget Option: Hotel on the Promenade – (under $150 at the time of this post) This is a boutique-style establishment positioned close to the Sea Point Promenade, with an elegant restaurant and bar for guests to enjoy.

📍Hostel Option: The Big – This recently refurbished luxury hostel is situated in Green Point and looks amazing! It provides a vibrant social atmosphere at competitive rates.

Getting Around Cape Town

Exploring Cape Town requires some planning due to its expansive layout. Here are three top ways to get around:

  • Uber: This was, for us by far the best solution — our drivers even waited for us on a few occasions. Is a cost-effective and efficient choice for short stays or evening outings. The service generally offers a good experience with friendly drivers and minimal wait times.
  • Tours! With the right tours, you won’t need to worry about getting around — get all the way to Cape Point, or the Winelands by planning your tours wisely! I highly recommend Viator – they have a huge variety of tours in South Africa and specifically Cape Town, including private drivers.
  • Renting a Car: Ideal for day trips or continuing your journey in South Africa. Be mindful of parking challenges and consider using a service like Uber for convenience in busy areas. Remember, driving is on the left side! We typically use RentalCars as they have the most options.
  • Public Transport: For those looking to experience the local way of travel, public transport is an option, with details available on Cape Town’s bus system.
