What to consider when choosing where to stay in San Diego

I live in Downtown San Diego and often have guests visit this gorgeous city, so I’ve checked out countless hotels. With this list, you’ll be able to find the perfect place to stay in San Diego!  Are you looking to relax by the water, or perhaps be able to walk everywhere? Maybe you are coming for a romantic weekend escape, or a concert or game at Petco Park? Perhaps it’s a business trip or you’re taking a cruise to or from San Diego?

Another important factor to consider is the location. San Diego is a large county with many diverse neighborhoods, each offering its own unique atmosphere and attractions. And then, of course, there’s the budget. San Diego can get pretty pricey, especially if there’s something going on — and don’t even think about coming during ComicCon in July when prices skyrocket and reservations are hard to come by.

Additionally, you’ll want to consider the amenities and services offered by the accommodation. Are you looking for a hotel with a pool and fitness center? Do you need a kitchenette or a full kitchen for preparing meals? Are you traveling with pets and need pet-friendly accommodations? These are all important factors to consider when choosing the perfect place to stay in San Diego.

Tips for booking accommodation in San Diego

When it comes to booking accommodation in San Diego, there are a few tips to keep in mind to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience.

Firstly, it’s important to book your accommodation in advance, especially during peak travel seasons and during large conventions. San Diego is a popular destination, and hotels and vacation rentals can fill up quickly, particularly during the summer months. Booking in advance will give you more options and ensure you secure the accommodation that best suits your needs.

Secondly, it’s a good idea to read reviews and do some research before making a booking. Websites such as TripAdvisor and Booking.com offer reviews and ratings from past guests, allowing you to get a sense of the quality and service of a particular accommodation. Reading reviews can help you avoid any unpleasant surprises and ensure you choose a reputable and reliable place to stay.

Lastly, don’t forget to consider any special requirements or preferences you may have. Whether you need a pet-friendly accommodation, require a kitchen for dietary restrictions, or prefer a specific type of room or view, it’s important to communicate your needs to the hotel or vacation rental before making a booking. This will ensure that your stay is tailored to your specific requirements and preferences.

San Diego Hotels by Area

Downtown San Diego Top Hotel Picks, Near Gaslamp and the Convention Center:

These San Diego hotels are near and around the Convention Center, Petco Park, and Seaport Village. Everything is super accessible and there’s no need for a car (also expensive to park). There are so many hotel choices, most of which are larger chains due to the proximity to the Convention Center and Petco Park.

  • Pendry HotelA bit more upscale and boutique, the Pendry is also in the heart of the Gaslamp area of Downtown San Diego.
  • Marriott Marquis – Twin towers with views to Coronado, several dining options (including a Roy’s). This Downtown San Diego hotel is great for business trips, families, and getaways.
  • Manchester Grand Hyatt – Just a bit further west toward Seaport Village, this hotel offers all of the expected Hyatt amenities with spectacular views of the bay and Coronado Island.
  • Margaritaville – Formerly Solamar, the hotel’s recent $31 million renovation is now one of Jimmy Buffet’s line of hotels. It’s smack dab in the center of the Galamp with nightlife and dining options.

Other Downtown San Diego hotel options include the Hilton Bayfront, Hard Rock Hotel and the Omni just across from each other and across from the Convention Center. Once Horton Plaza is finished, we’ll add the US Grant which is stunning but a bit off the path to anything downtown at the moment.

Intercontinental Hotel Near the MidWay
Intercontinental Hotel (Right) and Marriott Residence Inn (Left) Near the MidWay

Downtown San Diego Hotels Near the Midway, Hornblower Cruises, Cruise Lines, and Little Italy

  • InterContinental – Very convenient to the MidWay, the Maritime Museum and the cruise ship ports. It has a terrific restaurant on the roof deck called Seneca (get the pizza and a salad and take in the views) and a Del Frisco’s on the ground level (amazing steak and terrific happy hours with live jazz).
  • The Guild – Conveniently located, this Marriott property is a historic building, formerly a YMCA with a restaurant and bar. A stone’s throw from Santa Fe Depot where you can catch the trolley, the Amtrak, and the Coaster.
  • Carté – A Curio Hilton hotel in Little Italy is a great location. It has a rooftop bar, lovely and generous breakfasts, and a FIT on the property.

Coronado Island

Coronado Island, located across San Diego Bay boasts pristine beaches, historic architecture, and a relaxed coastal vibe. Great for families and romantic getaways, and even if you don’t stay here, spend a half day enjoying Coronado’s beaches, Silver Strand, Orange Avenue, and water sports.

  • Hotel MarisolCharming, historic near the beach hotel. One of my personal favorites. Just off of Orange Avenue close to shops and dining.
  • Hotel Del Coronado by HiltonGreat for families and relaxing on the beach. Several casual and upscale restaurants and close to shops and terrific dining along Orange Avenue. They also offer villas for larger groups. The ferry runs regularly to San Diego with two arrival points, or rent a car.
  • 1906 Lodge – Historic, boutique property (formerly a home), not on the water but very close. Doesn’t have the amenities of a hotel.

La Jolla

Nestled along the picturesque California coastline, La Jolla is a luxury destination with its beaches, dining, upscale shops, and stunning ocean views.

  • La Valencia – The iconic “Pink Lady” graces La Jolla’s Prospect Street, overlooking the Pacific coastline with its elegant presence. Great bar with views, close to shops and dining.
  • The Lodge at Torrey Pines – Overlooking the world-renowned Torrey Pines Golf Course, stunning craftsman style architecture and decor, close to great beaches but away from downtown La Jolla. More of a retreat. Perfect for weddings!
  • Estancia Hotel – Very close to UCSD, a smaller spa resort with lush gardens and lovely dining. It’s not very close to downtown La Jolla, so you’d need a car.

Del Mar

Nestled just north of the prestigious La Jolla, is Del Mar with its breathtaking coastal vistas, world-class dining, and upscale amenities. Not quite as busy as La Jolla.

  • Fairmont Grand Del MarA truly elegant hotel on a prize-winning golf course, Michelin-rated Adison Restaurant and all of the amenities you’d expect from Fairmont.
  • L’Auberge Del MarSituated in the charming coastal village of Del Mar, close to the beach, this is a top-tier hotel with great dining options and a very walkable village.

Pacific Beach and Mission Beach

These beach areas are ideal for families. The boardwalk can get a little crazy in the evenings but its fun for all ages and near major attractions like Sea World. These three options are on the higher room-rate side due to their proximity to attractions and water.

  • Catamaran Resort – Mission Bay – This is a great family resort with lots of water sport rentals. Nice restaurant right on the sand.
  • Paradise Point – Great for families, super close to Sea World.
  • San Diego Mission Bay Resort – Recently renovated property with rooms on the water. Great for everyone, especially great for families and get aways.

San Diego Hotels on a Budget

There are a number of well-rated hostels in San Diego as well as motels and vacation rentals in and around. Many of the hotels are a bit further inland near “Hotel Circle” but perfect if you have a car or are comfortable with public transportation.

Where NOT to stay in San Diego

In general, do not stay too far inland or too close to the border areas as there are far fewer activities there. Deciding where to stay should be based more on the activities you want to do and whether or not you’ll have a car. We do have good public transportation with the trolley, the Coaster, and Amtrak and several tour companies also provide bus options.
