Do I need to get shots?
Yes, most likely you will need shots. I went to our local Vons in San Diego which offers a $45 travel consultant fee and looked up my entire life record of shots. The local travel vaccine company wanted $300 for the same service. So, before your Masai Mara Safari in Africa, consult a healthcare provider for advice on necessary vaccinations, focusing on yellow fever, hepatitis A and B, typhoid, and routine vaccinations. Yellow fever vaccination is often a requirement, with proof needed for entry into many countries. Malaria prevention is also crucial. Start health preparations 4-6 weeks before your trip to ensure all vaccinations are up to date. CVS administered a couple of the shots that Vons didn’t have. Our General Practitioner prescribed our malaria pills. Here’s some more information. Also note that we passed through certain countries that required shots which Kenya didn’t so we did have to get those shots too.

Yes, US citizens currently need a visa to visit Kenya. U.S. citizens and many other nationalities can obtain a tourist visa upon arrival at the airport in Kenya or apply for one online before travel. The cost for a single-entry visa is $53, and it allows for a stay of up to 90 days. It’s important to ensure that your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay and that you have at least one blank page available for stamping. Additionally, you may need a yellow fever certificate if you have traveled through high-risk areas.
Pro-tip: Some countries also require 6 consecutive blank pages in your passport – like Ethiopia which we flew through! They didn’t stamp them all, but we got the fat passport just in case!

We really fretted on our first safari!! OMG, we must have visited a ton of sites, Banana Republics, and REI in search of the perfect outfits. Bottom line? Here are the essentials – and it’s pretty straightforward advice! I’m also covering color here because you’d be shocked by what some people wore (like hot pink and red).

- Neutral Colors: Choose garments in khaki, olive, tan, or light brown shades. These colors blend well with the safari environment, helping to avoid attracting undue attention from wildlife.
- Avoid Bright Colors and Whites: Bright colors can disturb animals, and white is impractical due to dust and mud, but it does provide nice contrast!
- Prohibited Prints: Camouflage and animal prints are not advised. Camouflage clothing is often associated with military attire in many African countries and is therefore inappropriate for tourists. Animal prints can be considered disrespectful or in poor taste.
- Layered Clothing: Regardless of the season, dressing in layers is key. Mornings and evenings can be cool, so pack a mix of lightweight and warmer layers that you can easily add or remove. Also, the balloon ride is COLD!!
